Transition to Senior School

A Seamless, Happy Transition

At Kneller Hall Junior School, the move from junior to senior school is not a hurdle. It is a natural next step carefully and individually planned by staff in close partnership with every family.

Because we are a through-school, there is no 11+ examination and no unnecessary pressure in Years 5 and 6. Instead, those years are spent deepening learning, building independence and preparing each child for the transition ahead. The pathway is smooth. The transition is happy. And the curriculum we can offer, freed from the constraint of 11+ preparation, is richer and more expansive as a result.

Academic Preparation

Our curriculum in Years 5 and 6 is designed to build genuine intellectual depth: more independent working, longer-form projects and subject-based thinking that mirrors what pupils will encounter at secondary level. Our pupils arrive in Year 7 not just knowing more, but knowing how to learn at that level.

Personal Preparation

Academic readiness is only part of the picture. Organisation, resilience, self-awareness and the confidence to navigate a larger, more complex environment are developed carefully over the junior years. Our pastoral team works closely with every child through the transition period to ensure they are ready in every sense.

External Senior School Applications

We fully support families who wish to explore external senior schools alongside the Kneller Hall pathway. Reference letters, guidance on the process and appropriate academic preparation are all available.
