Junior School Wellbeing

No One Is Left on the Sidelines

The early years of school are when children first learn how to be away from home, how to make friends, how to cope when something feels hard  and how to ask for help when they need it. At Kneller Hall Junior School, we treat these lessons with as much care as anything we teach in the classroom.

Every member of staff, academic and non-academic, knows every child. Not just their name, but their personality, their friendships, their wobbles and their wins. This allows for a kind of triangulation: each pupil is seen by different adults in different environments throughout the school day, so that a quiet worry never goes unnoticed for long. The children know they can speak to any member of staff about anything, and that someone will always listen. We work in close partnership with parents too, because we know that the early years of school are a journey the whole family takes together.

Our Pastoral Structure

In the Lower School (Reception to Year 2), every class has a dedicated Class Teacher who is the child’s primary pastoral anchor and the main point of contact for families. In the Upper School (Years 3–6), this role is held by the Form Tutor. Both register their classes each morning, monitor pupils throughout the day and respond promptly to any concerns.

Pupil Voice

Children are encouraged to share their thoughts and raise concerns with their teacher, another trusted adult or through our established channels. We also have a trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) on site, available to any pupil who would benefit.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is not a policy at our school, it is a culture. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Deputy and Safeguarding Governor ensure that our systems are current, proactive and embedded in daily school life. All staff receive regular training, and we work with external specialists including the NSPCC to support pupils’ awareness and confidence.

SEND and Learning Support

We are an inclusive school that celebrates and supports a wide range of abilities. High expectations are maintained for every pupil, with careful differentiation built into our teaching. Small-group interventions are offered where helpful, and our specialist SENDCo oversees support for pupils with additional needs.
